Polycarp was martyred at the age of 86 in reaction to the unrelated killimg of a youth called Germanicus at a Pagan Festival. His killing was called for by the crowd, he waited calmly for his captors, & invited them to eata meal while he prayed for an hour. He was killed after interrrogation (when his faith never wavered) at the games in the Amphitheatre- being bound, killed with a sword then burnt at the stake. Fellow Christians collected his bones buried him, and wrote an account of his trial and martyrdom- the first authentic example of its kind.
